In Gym Class, we are making words using letter cards.  Oh, but we have to travel across the gym to get the letters; using scooters.  How cool is that?

In Literacy, we are working on what comes first and then what comes second.  We are using clues to help us read and understand new words--such as tadpoles.  Please ask us and we can tell you more about this cool story--well, it is actually a science nonfiction book.  Umm what is that?

Hinchley's Dairy Farm Field Trip!

We had a great time on the field trip this week!  Even though it was a little cold for this time of year, the kids were too busy with all the activities at the farm to notice.  We got to go on a wagon ride behind the tractor, pick pumpkins, milk a cow, feed the goats, pet the calves, and feed a bottle to a newborn lamb.  Thanks to the adults that joined us and a special thanks to McKenzie's mom Nicole for taking the pictures below!  Ask your child about their favorite part of the field trip :)

 

 

Sandburg iPad Student Contract

A few weeks ago all the kids at Sandburg discussed and signed a contract that talks about how they are appropriately to use the iPads at school.  As we begin using the iPads more frequently throughout the day, it is important to be reminding the kids that having access to the iPads is a privilege and the purpose of using them in the classroom is to support what they are learning.  Please take the time to review some of the items with your child and let us know if you have any questions.

Literacy Centers

Each day, after the kids finish their independent word work, they go to different literacy centers around the room.  Below are a few of the examples of the centers that the kids worked at this week.  Some centers (like independent reading) will be a choice all year long, while others (like handwriting) change every week.  Ask your kids which literacy centers they worked on this week!

Build a city--students rolled a dice and then counted Unifix cubes to make a city

Garbage--students tried to put cards in sequential order from 1 to 10

Oral Storytelling

This week in writing we practiced illustrating and orally telling a narrative story.  The Red Alligators wrote stories about the routine we go through in the morning before we are ready to start our day together.  Oral storytelling is a great way to introduce children to being authors, because actually sounding out and writing words can be very frustrating at first.  We will be adding words after more practice.  Above is a video of Xavier sharing his story.
