Monsters Monsters

This is our poem/song for the week. We looked at rhyming words and danced to the song as well.  Cool!

This is an example of a morning message we wrote together.  As you can see we are using Look and Say words to help us read and write everyday.

Below, three friends are using the iPads to help them with adding numbers.

Below, friends are using sponges to create paintings.  Gentle tapping is the key to a beautiful painting.

Lost and Found Tables

Yeah, it is that time of the year!  Our blue lost and found cabinet is filling up fast so this week, until Friday, all lost and found items are put on tables at the front entrance.  If your child is missing an item or two, good time to come and check.  Look through them before the weekend otherwise, Ms Donna will wash the unclaimed items and take them to St Vinny.

Some Math Activities

Here, two friends are working on pattern blocks. They are putting pattern blocks together to make a big shape, and then they are counting and writing down the numbers of pattern blocks they used.

Below, a friend is working on the alligator mouths  < > =, bigger than, smaller than, equal.

Then below, Mrs. Louison is teaching the Kinders how to do addition story problems using the simple addition sentences.

Snow is here!

The kids had a great time playing in the snow today!  They made snow angels and climbed on the hills that Mr. Al made with the plow.  Even though it was cold, most of the kids had appropriate clothing for the weather.  We know this is just the beginning!

Counting On and Making Sentences with Sight Words

Some more activities on videos:

This is a student working on his "Counting On" book using a dice to pick the "magic number"

Sometimes after we are done with our Mondo phonics, we put sight words we know, into sentences. Some sentences we created are quite long and complex.

In Gym, we are learning to use a hockey stick...our job is to keep the hockey stick on the ground but yet moving the ball as well.  It is very tricky but we love it.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today the kids made turkey hats to celebrate Thanksgiving!  Because gratitude is a character trait we are focusing on this year, we talked about different things we are thankful for and the kids wrote their ideas on the feathers of their turkeys.  Ask your child what they are thankful for :)

Phonics Practice

Each day after our phonics lesson, the kids get together with a partner to read their phonics practice page.  One student is the coach and the other is the reader, and then they switch jobs.  Below is a video that shows how the kids work together and encourage one another to practice their reading skills!

2D Shapes!

In math the past couple weeks we have been talking about and comparing two dimensional shapes.  We have discussed how many sides and corners they have and been creating shapes with rubber bands on the geoboards.  Tell your child you are thinking of a shape that has 6 sides and 6 corners.  They better say hexagon! :)

For Literacy, our new sight words for this week are: I, happy, on

We are learning to read and sing a song call "Walking in the Woods"--it is really cool and very catchy too.

Our new sounds this week are : "m" and "s".  We have been learning these sounds and the sight words everyday.  If you can help at  home too, that would be awesome!

In Music, we danced and listened to songs but we have to be very good listeners too because the music teacher can say "freeze" anytime and we have to freeze.

In Ipad, Mr. D finally showed and allowed us to take pictures of things around the room; not people though---except for Mr. Thao.

In Art, Ms Koerner read a book about dots in nature and then we tried to make dots of our own.  We did not realize how many dots there are out there in the world.

In Gym, we played a game involving throwing beach balls at friends--kind of like beach ball tag.  Don't worry, the beach balls are very soft.

Yeah!  End of another hard working week.  Give your child a high five or a big hug.

In Art this week, we made squashes.  No, we did not plant the squashes, we used construction papers.

For Ipad with Mr. D, we worked on a few new apps and some old ones too.  We did one that helps us count and one that helps us learn to write letters.

Mondo: we finished our What Come First? book and we used some pictures to help us understand and remember more about the events in the story.  Oh, and ask us about non-fiction and fiction.

In Math, some of the friends are learning about measuring. Mr. Thao called Menards to order a piece of wooden block but we did not know how to tell the Menard lady how big of a piece of wood block...we finally figured it out using Unifix cubes to help us measure.  Oh, don't worry, Ms Kent was our pretend Menard's Lumber Lady.

More cool Stuff we did this week.

Some of the activities we are doing this week.

Making a dog using pattern blocks.

Building the Cities with Unifix Cubes.

Going fishing for Numbers and Colors.

In Gym Class, we are making words using letter cards.  Oh, but we have to travel across the gym to get the letters; using scooters.  How cool is that?

In Literacy, we are working on what comes first and then what comes second.  We are using clues to help us read and understand new words--such as tadpoles.  Please ask us and we can tell you more about this cool story--well, it is actually a science nonfiction book.  Umm what is that?
